Arrangements for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced

There are "no plans" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The White House withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Background Context

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar suggesting the president had pressured him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump supported a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, indicating that halting hostilities would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president commented conversations concerning the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently came ahead of speculation that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
