Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
