Colombian Leader Says 'I Would Take Up Arms Again' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and his Colombian counterpart have turned up the volume of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations after US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has narcotics facilities and processing labs and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Escalating Rhetoric and Accusations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, Trump hinted at analogous armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the nation is also "very ill" and “run by an unwell individual involved in producing cocaine and trafficking it to the United States."

While Colombia stands as the leading source of the narcotic, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is directly tied to the business.

A Strained Partnership

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from cross-party backing from American politicians, but relations have soured significantly after Trump was elected.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups such as the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom disbanded following a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Firm Response

Upon being questioned if armed intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

The Colombian leader, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments without information. Cease defaming me," he posted in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will transform into numerous insurgents across the countryside. And if they detain me, which a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the ‘jaguar’ of the people," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Leader

He passed part of his youth participating with the radical M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate that he never participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in drafting the nation's constitution in the early 90s and later became a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the capital city before being elected the presidency.

"I made a vow to never again hold a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister stated that the president’s security detail was strengthened.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have condemned the threats of American military action against their nation.

Political and Economic Strains

The US revoked the president's entry visa after he encouraged US troops to ignore unlawful commands. Later, in October, authorities imposed financial sanctions on Petro, his spouse and various close collaborators.

At the same time as the US increased its military presence in the region and striking suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out operations on boats in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
