Background

These reported attacks come after a prolonged military buildup by the United States against the Venezuelan government. Since August, authorities reported a significant naval presence off the country's northern coast and a number of air strikes on boats accused of drug trafficking.

Venezuela's government has stated "the implementation of external threat" and ordered all national defense protocols to be initiated. It has also urged its political forces to mobilize and "reject this external act."

The White House and the US Department of Defense did not immediately addressed requests for clarification regarding the events.
