Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Next Head of State.

After a definitive second-round vote, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.

A Resounding Win

With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration

Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly focused on promises to combat increasing insecurity and significantly curb migration.

He repeatedly cited migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he delivered an final demand for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His plans featured U.S.-style measures such as building holding facilities, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern border.

Amid a Regional Trend

Many analysts interpret Kast's victory as fitting into a broader conservative wave in Latin America, coming after this year's electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other pundits also frame it as a continuation of the established swing of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Ruling Lacking a Clear Majority

In spite of his decisive electoral win, Kast will not hold an clear majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even when various conservative parties are grouped together.

This political landscape may hinder his plans, such as a pledge to slash public spending by billions within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.

"There are many questions about how a Kast administration will look like that are uncertain because he has not said the way he will do them," said a political science expert.

The professor stated, "On the economy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies common for the right. But the area with much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
