People have gathered throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the provisions of the agreement.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The source said the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the deal.

He added that the talks are "tough and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are striving to close the disparities between the both parties.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the release of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the music event, grieving people came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, especially my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area said another two fatalities had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medical staff said.
