When I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
