Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The armed faction stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Area inhabitants informed journalists that the armed men then led a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.
