The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
