The Mayor-Elect states he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on our family's safety and the need to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
In his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he hails from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
