Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Maiden Speech
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The young figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Governing with Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations.
